New York City's Top Level Domain (TLD) identifies you as a NYC business, organization, or resident based in the City.
A Top-Level Domain (TLD) is what is at the end of a domain name (such as ".com", ".org", or ".net"). The growth of the internet introduced a need for more “top-level” names, leading to the inclusion of cities, countries, regions and organizations as TLDs. By using a .nyc web address, businesses, organizations and residents will have a powerful way to find each other, and the ability to market themselves online.
A domain name is a technical term for an Internet address, such as www.example.nyc. When you register a name for a website, you are registering the domain name. When .nyc domain names become available, businesses, organizations residents located in NYC will be able to register www.yourwebsite.nyc domain names to associate their website with the City of New York.
Identify yourself, your business or organization with the power of the city's name. A regular domain name merely says, I am a business online. Owning a .nyc address says I am a New York City business, I am a New York City organization or I am a New Yorker.
It is currently expected that .nyc will launch as early as May 2014, with phasing as follows.
PHASE 1: Trademarks Sunrise (45 days)
Sunrise is an initial period designed to protect intellectual property rights holders: those with registered trademarks. Trademark owners can take advantage of the Sunrise phase to safeguard the domain name that matches their trademark. As required by ICANN, all trademark owners must have their marks validated and registered in the Trademark Clearinghouse as a minimum requirement if they wish to register during Sunrise. Submit a trademark to the Clearinghouse at: http://trademark-clearinghouse.com
Learn more about the Trademark Clearinghouse on ICANN’s website: http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/about/trademark-clearinghouse
If there is more than one qualified trademark holder applying for the same domain name, an auction will be held to determine the registrant.
PHASE 2: City Government-Affiliated Reserve List (30 days) / Sunrise Auctions
During this phase, City government and government-affiliated .NYC entities will have the right to register .NYC domains through a City-designated single point of contact that will authenticate eligibility. Names registered must be from those on the reserve list and be an exact match of the city government-affiliate organization or program name. Domain names on reserve list will not be available for registration by third parties. The reserve list is now closed.
PHASE 3: Landrush (60 days)
All businesses, organizations and residents with a physical address in the City will have an equal opportunity to register .nyc domains during the Landrush phase. There will be a slightly higher fee for registrations occurring during the Landrush phase. If there is only one application for a .NYC domain name during this period, the applicant for that name will be granted the registration. If there are multiple applications for a domain name during this period, however, an auction will be held to determine the registrant after completion of the Landrush period.
PHASE 4: General Availability
After the Landrush phase, all businesses, organizations and residents with a physical address in the City of New York shall be entitled to register .NYC domain names in real-time on a first-come, first-served basis. For the first ninety (90) days of General Availability, in the event that a domain name registrant applied for a domain name that is an exact match of a trademark appearing in the Trademark Clearinghouse, the registrant will receive a notice about that trademark during the registration process and asked whether or not it wishes to proceed with the registration. If it does, the name will proceed to registration, but may subsequently be challenged by the Trademark owner through an ICANN dispute resolution procedure if the name is likely to cause confusion with the trademark.
Costs: Wholesale pricing to domain registrars for each phase as follows, with retail pricing determined by each registrar.
$20 – City Government
$15 – Sunrise Application Fee (one-time)
$30 – Landrush Application Fee (one-time)
$20 – General Availability (first-come-first-served)
During Sunrise, Landrush and General Availability, a minimum 1-year annual registration fee of $20 will also be applicable.
A pre-registration is not a registration and does not provide any rights to a domain. Some registrars, however, may accept pre-registrations primarily as a means to build contact lists they later use for marketing purposes, and may later attempt to register the name on your behalf. A pre-registration does not guarantee you will successfully register the domain in the future. Users should be especially cautious of any websites requesting payment for a “pre-registration.”
The .nyc Registry does not accept pre-registrations, and does not endorse or recommend any pre-registration sites. If you are interested in registering a .nyc domain name when registration opens we suggest providing your contact information here to receive .nyc updates. You will be then receive updates and additional details as they become available, and be notified by email when registration begins.
A .nyc registrant is a company, organization or individual who registers a .nyc domain name.
New York City businesses and organizations with a physical street address in the City and individuals whose primary place of residence is in the City can register a .nyc domain name. Trademark holders with a NYC address will be given priority during the application process in order to secure their intellectual property. For more information, please click here.
Registrars of .nyc domain names will determine the retail annual fee of .nyc domain names. The City expects multiple Registrars to participate and for pricing to be competitive with the market prices for other top-level domains.
Domain name registrars sell domain names to registrants. Many registrars provide other services such as website builders, hosting, e-mail, search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM). A full list of ICANN accredited registrars can be found at www.ICANN.org.
The .nyc registry will promote .nyc (directly and through registrars), accept registrations from participating Registrars, manage the master database of all .nyc domain names and operate the Domain Name System (DNS) to enable .nyc addresses to be routed to the applicable .nyc website. In addition, the registry manages and enforces the policies associated with .nyc.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was formed in 1998 as an international not-for-profit public-benefit corporation dedicated to security and stability of the Internet. It bears the responsibility of coordinating and managing the Domain Name System (DNS). In 2012 ICANN began the process of expanding the number of Top-Level Domains beyond the current .com, .net, .org, .us, .biz and others).
Upon acceptance of its application for the .nyc domain, the City of New York intends to enter into an agreement with ICANN under which it will have control over the administration and management of the .nyc domain.
Neustar, Inc. is a publicly traded company listed on the NYSE (www.Neustar.biz). Neustar currently operates the registry for .US for the Department of Commerce and .BIZ under a contract with ICANN, and is the technical registry services provider in support of .CO, .TEL and .Travel. The City of New York selected Neustar in a competitive procurement to provide the technical registry services and support necessary to make .nyc names available to the public.
